A Charter School is a publicly funded school created and governed by parents, teachers, and community members who have the opportunity to educate with greater flexibility and freedom from governmental regulation than traditional public schools.  Georgia's Charter School Legislation became law on July 1, 1998.  A Charter School must be approved by and is contractually accountable to the local School Board to ensure financial responsibility and academic performance.
