Summary Results, Survey 2003

In a nutshell, parents and faculty/staff members are pleased with their overall experience at BCCS, and feel that it is a good choice for the families of our area.  Primary areas (most-mentioned) that need improvement included:

§         Communication schoolwide.

§         Increasing the focus on character development.

§         Increasing the focus on good discipline.

§         Increasing academic enrichment and remediation for students of all learning abilities.

§         Increasing safety and usefulness of the BCCS facilities.

§         Implementing more formalized sports activities.

 

7th-9th grade students at BCCS expressed their belief that the teachers at BCCS really care about their students.  They said the amount of homework given is “about right,” and that they, too, would like to see more sports opportunities and better sports facilities.  They also suggested a number of new classes they would like to see offered at BCCS.

 

Survey results were shared with the BCCS Board of Directors and with Ms.Pinson.  Thank you to everyone who so thoughtfully completed a survey.  For more detailed results, see below.

§         Of 243 surveys distributed, 109 were returned, for a response rate of 45%.

§         Based on narrative comments made, primary areas of concern are (ranked in order of frequency mentioned):

§         Need a regular newsletter, or increased use of website, to improve communication schoolwide. (9 responders)

§         More intentional character development in all grades;  tolerance and treating others with respect, less teasing. (6 responders)

 

§         Improved cleanliness of facility, specifically bathrooms (5 responders)

§         More access to arts/music during the school day. (5 responders)

§         Need football, basketball, baseball, other sports. (5 responders)

 

§         Need more ethnic diversity.  (3 responders)

§         Get rid of unhealthy snack/drink machines (3 responders)

§         Need a new gym. (3 responders)

 

§         With regard to academics, two responders mentioned each of the following:

§         More library time, better-equipped library

§         More help for slower learners, including tutoring at school

§        With regard to facilities, two responders mentioned each of the following:

§         Improve safety, water drainage of all play areas.

§         Remove old gym.

§        With regard to faculty/staff issues, two responders mentioned each of the following:

§         Need more frequent communication with teachers, when problems arise.

§         Noise level in classes, hallway is too high.

§         Uniform requirement must be emphasized.

§         Need a guidance counselor

 

§      With regard to volunteer requirements, two responders suggested alternatives to actual physical time spent on a task:

§         Buy-out option, to “purchase” a set number of hours, at an hourly rate.

§         Donation of supplies.

Comments

 

Faculty/staff members made many comments that were shared with Ms.Pinson.  the most-mentioned are listed below:

 

§         I enjoy my job

§         Another copier would be nice.

§         Need a new PE facility badly.

§         Need full time school counselor (developmental guidance program, character development, documentation of testing and ongoing progress, SST team leader)

§         Shortage in funding has hurt us this year, when we couldn’t hire more staff.

§         Teachers must be examples, when it comes to volunteer hours.
